What Fabric UATAC Assault Pants Are Made From

The main fabric of UATAC assault pants is 65% cotton and 35% polyester in a ripstop weave with a water-repellent Teflon finish. The knees are reinforced with CORDURA® 500d Brookwood® USA, the seat is double-layered and the seams are sewn with reinforced German thread. A size M weighs about 1,100 g.

Why fabric composition decides more than price

The most common complaint about budget tactical trousers is always the same: worn through at the knees in two months, or a seam split in the crotch. Neither is a tailoring problem. It is that the fabric and the thread do not match the load. Field use puts clothing through a cycle civilian garments never see: crawling, kneeling, hours seated in a vehicle, constant rubbing against gear.

So read the specification rather than the word «tactical», and look at three things: the fibre ratio, the type of reinforcement and the thread in the seams.

Why 65/35

Pure cotton breathes well and does not melt from a spark, but it dries slowly and wears through quickly. Pure polyester is strong and fast-drying, but it clings to the skin in heat and behaves worse near open flame. The 65/35 ratio is the compromise proven by field wear: the fabric stays breathable, holds its shape and does not fall apart at the seams by the third month.

The ripstop weave adds a grid of reinforced threads on top of that: a puncture or a cut runs into the nearest cell and stops. Small damage stays small instead of becoming a split trouser leg mid-task.

Element Material What it solves
Main fabric 65% cotton, 35% polyester, ripstop Balance of breathability, strength and tear resistance
Finish Teflon Sheds water and dirt, fabric dries faster
Knees CORDURA® 500d Brookwood® USA Abrasion resistance when crawling
Seat Double layer of base fabric Durability in vehicles and fighting positions
Seams Reinforced German thread They do not open under load
Hardware YKK, VELCRO®, two D-rings and a carabiner Works with gloves and in the cold

What the Teflon finish actually gives

The finish does not make the trousers waterproof. It makes water and dirt bead off instead of soaking in. You feel the difference in dew, wet grass and wet snow: the fabric takes on less water and returns to a dry state faster.

The finish is consumable. It weakens gradually with abrasion and washing, and it is restored with a proofing product for technical clothing — not with fabric softener and not with a hot wash.

Construction that serves the same service life

Stretch panels with a 1.5 elongation factor give freedom in squats and when crossing obstacles — without them fabric tears exactly at the flex points. Ventilation zones offset the density of the main fabric so the trousers stay usable in warm weather.

Knee pads are included and held by a three-point system: height adjustment through the front opening, VELCRO® fixation and a hook against vertical slippage. Universal inserts from other models usually slide down when running, and then the wearer simply removes them — which means the protection stops existing.

Common mistakes

  1. Judging by camouflage alone and ignoring the composition and reinforcement.
  2. Comparing the price of trousers without pads and belt against a complete kit.
  3. Buying skin-tight: a tactical cut assumes a base layer and movement.
  4. Washing at 60 °C with softener — the finish disappears within a few cycles.
  5. Assuming CORDURA is only on the removable knee pads.

What this fabric does not do

Ripstop and Teflon do not make the trousers flame resistant. Cotton in the blend behaves better near sparks than pure synthetics, but this is not flame-resistant clothing, and work with open flame calls for special materials.

The finish is also not a membrane: in sustained rain the trousers will wet out. Teflon deals with spray, dew and dirt, not with prolonged precipitation.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Check the main fabric composition in the model specifications.
  2. See what reinforces the knees and whether the seat is double-layered.
  3. Confirm that knee pads and a belt are included.
  4. Match your measurements against that model's size chart, with room for a base layer.
  5. Check that the colour you need exists in this model.

Frequently asked questions

What fabric are UATAC assault pants made from?

65% cotton and 35% polyester in a ripstop weave with a Teflon finish. The knees are reinforced with CORDURA® 500d Brookwood® USA and the seat is double-layered.

How much do the trousers weigh?

A size M weighs about 1,100 g including the structural reinforcements. Exact weight depends on size and model.

Do the trousers soak through in rain?

The Teflon finish sheds spray, dew and dirt, but it is not a membrane. In sustained rain the fabric will wet out, so an outer layer is needed for those conditions.

Are knee pads included?

Yes. Assault pants ship with knee pads, a belt and a dry bag, so nothing has to be bought separately.

How long does the Teflon finish last?

It is consumable and weakens with abrasion and washing. It is restored with a technical-wear proofing product rather than by washing with softener.
