The detail most buyers miss about knee reinforcement
A common assumption is that the knee is protected by the pad. It is not. The pad absorbs impact; abrasion is handled by the fabric. If CORDURA is only stitched onto the removable insert, then the moment you take that insert out — and people do, in heat or on long movements — the knee is back on plain fabric.

What it actually costs
When people compare prices, they look at the number on the pants. But most premium makers sell knee pads, belt and dry bag separately, so the cost of a kit that is actually ready to go is noticeably higher than the product page suggests.
The second half of the bill is service life. A budget pair that lasts three months of hard wear means two or three purchases a season, plus the time spent sourcing them exactly when you need pants now. A pair that runs several seasons is cheaper per month of wear even if it cost twice as much up front.
The honest limit: if you need pants for a handful of outings a year, paying for durability will not pay you back. A cheaper model covers that use.
Knee pads: why some stay put and some slide
The most common complaint about knee pad pants is that the inserts migrate down, so it is easier to take them out. And once they are out, the protection stops existing — even though it was paid for.
It comes down to retention. A pad that simply sits in a pocket creeps downward under its own weight when you run or squat. A working design holds it at three points: height adjustment through the front opening, VELCRO® fixation and a hook that blocks vertical movement. Then the pad stays on the kneecap regardless of how hard you move.
Material matters too. EVA is a light, resilient polymer that absorbs impact and does not go stiff in the cold. Hard plastic inserts hold their shape better but restrict knee flex and get uncomfortable during long periods in a vehicle.

A practical rule: if you are on your feet and moving most of the time, durability matters more than grams. If the work is mostly seated or rear-area, extra structure just gets in the way.
Pants for autumn and winter
Separate winter pants are rarely necessary. Ripstop assault pants work year-round, and the cold is handled from underneath — with a base layer, not with thicker pants.
The logic mirrors the upper half of the kit. The base layer moves moisture and gives the first bit of insulation, the pants block wind and abrasion, and the Teflon finish keeps the fabric from soaking up wet snow and dew. Insulated over-trousers are only needed for long static work in hard frost.

The classic seasonal mistake is buying pants skin-tight in summer and discovering in winter that a thermal layer will not fit underneath. Build that allowance into the size from the start.
Sizing: why your usual letter does not apply
A tactical cut is built around a system, not a body: base layer, gear, work in a deep squat. So size by the centimetre measurements in the chart for that specific model, not by the letter you wear in civilian clothing.
Three measurements matter for pants: waist, hips and height. The belt adjusts by roughly five centimetres from the chart value, which covers a difference in the waist but not in inseam length.
On length specifically: the pad should sit on the kneecap when the leg is bent. In oversized pants the insert ends up below the knee and stops working, so buying a size up because yours is out of stock is worse than waiting for the right one.
Pockets: how many you actually need
Pocket count became a marketing metric, but placement matters more. A pocket you cannot reach in a plate carrier or while seated in a vehicle does not count.
Gen 5.6 pants have eleven pockets; Gen 5.7 has thirteen, including two side pockets for a knife. The difference between generations is in placement and access, not in the number itself. A pass-through pocket lets you reach the contents without unfastening gear.

What pants do not do
EVA pads absorb impact when you drop onto a knee, but they are not ballistic protection and will not stop a fragment. Ripstop limits a tear; it does not prevent a puncture. A Teflon finish sheds spray, dew and dirt, but in sustained rain the fabric will wet out — that calls for a membrane outer layer.
And no pair of pants compensates for the wrong size. If the fit is off, both protection and mobility suffer.
